What is Drywall ?
Drywall is made primarily from the semi-hydrous form of calcium sulphate (CaSO4.½ H2O) plaster created by heating ground gypsum rock (hydrous calcium sulfate). The plaster is mixed with fiber (typically paper and/or fiberglass), foaming agent, various additives that increase mildew and fire resistance, and water and is then formed by sandwiching a core of wet gypsum between two sheets of heavy paper or fiberglass mats. When the core sets and is dried, the sandwich becomes rigid and strong enough for use as a building material. There are a few types of drywall that are available in Maryland. You can discuss with us the appropriate type to use.Regular white board; this type is what is primarily used for normal application in homes.
Fire-resistive(“Type X”), which comes in various ratings based on the time the product can withstand a standardized fire test; often perlite, vermiculite, and boric acid are added to improve fire resistance.
Greenboard is a drywall that contains an oil-based additive that provides moisture resistance. It is commonly used in washrooms and other areas expected to experience elevated levels of humidity.
Concrete backerboard is slightly more expensive than greenboard but more water-resistant.
Enviroboard is made from recycled agricultural materials.
